Whiteguy Butterfly

This is gonna be a quick one – gotta synch the ipod, shower, eat, pack, and whatever else before taking off …Abram and I just got back from Alcatraz and are meeting the class up north (3 hour drive) for a few days of camping, snorkeling, and fun. STOKED! I’m gonna sleep under the stars, but apparently cold blooded creatures like to curl up with you at night. Oh bother.

We were up at 10 to 6am to meet the boat in Kino Viejo that would be taking us to Alcatraz. His name was Guero Mariposa – which translates into Whiteguy Butterfly. Cosmé our boat man is away getting a van fixed with the station manager. Mr. Butterfly runs the banana boat ride (50 pesos a person) around these parts. There was a tshirt over the motor on this lovely boat – also named Mariposa. They were so kind as to help the lady (myself) off the boat into the deep ½ a foot water. “And Sarah – if we forget about you…call Cosmé’s woman”.

We had our easter egg hunt a little early as we went searching for nests/eggs/& chicks of yellow footed gulls. I got s*** on pretty good – taking it as a sign that good look is on it’s way…thankfully I had a hat on. I got attacked a few times too – but we had those big bamboo sticks in our backs to deter them from clawing our necks. There were lots of Frigate birds around – they look so awesome in the air. When we were done I ate a most delicious peach on the beach and since mr.butterfly was on Mexican time, he was fashionably late picking us up.

As we drove back to Kino Nuevo – I kick myself for not having a camera. People are beginning to flood the town and the excitement and energy of Semana Santa is on the rise. We passed a few folks dressed like Taqi natives in full faced masks, leg junglers, and pounding drums. I gave them a solid fist pump as we drove by. There was also the most greasiest white dude I’ve ever seen.

We will be back from camping on Saturday – right in time for the huge debauchery that is Semana Santa. I AM STOKED!
