Day 2 Montreal
After a great night sleep on the train, we woke up and made our way to the breakfast car for some
toast and coffee. After arriving at the station, we gathered our
belongings, and headed into the Montreal Station at about 9 am local
time. Not sure of where to go or what to do, we texted our friend
Tor, who claims we didn't wake her up...but the sleep in her eyes
when she opened the door for us was obvious. Thanks Tor!!!!
We were very hopeful about getting a call from CBC Montreal, but trying not to think about it too
much...catching up with Tor and her bf Jake, who plays drums in
Hollerado a rock band based out of Montreal, who are getting ready to
head to SXSW in Austin, Texas. About 1130 my phone rang with an
unfamiliar number and lo and behold it was Jennifer, one of the
reporters from CBC!! We had a mini interview over the phone and she
said she had to talk to her producer, but if we were free between 3-6
they'd love to have us come in and play live in the studio.
It was a beautiful day in Montreal (our whole trip so far has been blessed with sunshine so far) so we
decided to head out into the city and get some fresh air. We walked
down to the venue we were playing that night (Barfly) and duct taped
a poster on the window of the bar, and were walking back to get some
food when the phone rang again and we were booked in at CBC Radio for
4:20 local time.
After taking the Metro and trying out my 'asking for directions in french' skills we made it to the CBC
building in lots of time to get settled in and take in what a real
radio station looks like (this was no 95.7 The Wolf!!) Everyone at
the station was really great to us, and the host Bernie was a great
big bear of a man. After the news, weather, traffic report and debate
on hits to the head in hockey we were ready to go.
Setting up 2 mics for a during song on air soundcheck wasn't the most ideal situation to be in, but I'm told
it sounded really good. Radio is one of those funny situations where
you're just sitting in a room talking to one guy, but you never have
any idea of how many people might be listening. I must say we both
had some nervous sweat happening for our first CBC radio appearance.
And it always goes by so quickly....10 minutes seems like 30 seconds.
We are going to get in contact with them again on the way back
through Montreal to do a tour recap. Thanks again to Steve and
Monique for happening to be on the train that day and sending such a
great recommendation!!
And then there was Barfly, this venue is a little hole in the wall bar, with some decent beers on tap,
classic surly bartender (look out Ferg!!) and a very dusty carpet on
stage. We were starting off the night and had a great set interrupted
by tuning issues and the occasional shout outs to the crowd for being
out in such numbers on a monday. It would have been great to have our
cd available for the show, but such is life, crossing our fingers
that they're waiting for us at the Raw Sugar Cafe today in Ottawa. FM
High Low finsihed off the night with some sweet funkiness. We love
these fellas.
An announcement from above is telling me we're pulling into Ottawa, until next time!!
