Event Description

Exhibit of Recent New Brunswick Art Bank Acquisitions to Open at UNB Art Centre

The UNB Art Centre in Fredericton showcases contemporary works by artists who live and work in the province in an exhibit of recent New Brunswick Art Bank Acquisitions. The exhibit opens with a reception for the public at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 22 and continues through June 22.

Marie Maltais, Director of the UNB Art Centre announced today, “The pieces selected for acquisition by the Art Bank represent the wide diversity and high quality of visual art being produced by professional artists throughout New Brunswick. The variety of mediums and artistic vision makes for a dynamic exhibit.”

The New Brunswick Art Bank serves as a record of artistic excellence in the visual arts in the province. Fourteen works of art by 11 New Brunswick artists were acquired by the Art Bank in 2008. The acquisitions were completed by the following artists: Craig Schneider, Jacques Arseneault, Jennifer Bélanger, Jack Bishop, Mario Doucette, Elizabeth Grant, Chris Lloyd, Peter Manchester, Geordie Millar, Dennis Austin Reid, and Anna Torma.

Over the past year, these works have been traveling to galleries and exhibition centres throughout the province—this occasion will be the first time they have been exhibited together in Fredericton. On completion of the provincial tour in October 2009, the pieces will be displayed in government buildings.

A five-member jury of New Brunswick artists and arts professionals selected the artworks from approximately 100 submissions to the 2007-08 Art Bank Acquisitions Program. In addition to excellence in the visual arts, criteria included technical quality, size, art forms and art media. All submissions had to have been created within the past two years. Information about the 2009-2010 Acquisitions Program is available at www.gnb.ca/culture.

NB Art Bank Acquisitions runs until June 19 at the UNB Art Centre. The UNB Art Centre is open Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton.

Admission is free.
